Note that this is on the new short block installed about 10,000 miles ago. I guess I’m okay with this as long as it doesn’t get any worse. I like this car but it really likes to burn oil.

Oil consumption and head gasket issues have prevented me from buying a Subaru. It’s not the Boxer configuration, my Cayman doesn’t burn oil

At least you can drive a car that’s burning oil. 1 qt/5,000 miles falls into the acceptable range. But my Mazda doesn’t do that.

Donk.com huh, wonder how often people try to buy that domain from them.

What’s the oil change intervals on that model?

Isnt a subaru that stops burning oil like a land rover (or H53E helicopter) that stops leaking oil, indicating that it has run out? I’m pretty sure 1qt over 5k miles is normal. I have gotten used to my Miata losing 1qt/1.5k miles as “normal” so that doesnt sound bad at all lol. I have added a quart of oil to my Sti since buying it but have yet to determine the loss rate. Noticed some oil when I pulled off the intercooler to change my starter. Seems to be the usual with these cars. Also, my headgasket was replaced right before I bought the car.
Also “www.donk.com” sounds hilarious to have as the address for a car dealer.

It was 7k, I switched it to 5k so I wouldn’t have to worry.

I’m okay with 1/5k. When they did the shot block it was at 1/1,200 miles.

Toyota had intervals for the early 1ZZs that were too long and may have led to oil consumption. Even GM on my Vibe says 5k intervals. Hell no, I change that every 3,500 miles.

I don’t think 0w-20w oil is helping much either.

Dang. I’ve got 10k more miles than you and my outback is 2 years newer...

You drive to much, duh.

They reduced the official interval from 7,500 to 6,000 sometime in 2015 for the FB20/FB25 as one of the responses to the oil consumption issue. I forget if they officially set that for pre-2015 models, but I believe most people are following that.

Checked for piston slap? Common in those ....

I guess that’s the basic reason for oil consumption, the rings don’t set properly then prematurely wear out.

That’s actually pretty good. Turbo cars driven hard on a regular basis will burn double that, I check at every fillup. I bet there’s a similar note in your owner’s manual.

Think it’s a bit more than that - pistons juddering up and down in the cylinders. But maybe not. You can sure hear it at idle ...

Burnt oil: it’s what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

Could it be a balance issue with the configuration since I think the difference in Porsche and Subaru flat engines is the firing order. I always thought the boxer engines differed from Porsche’s flat 4s and 6s because the boxer pairs fired at the same time.

This is pretty solid. I wish this was the case the first time my car started burning oil. It went from burning a quart every 5k to 1 quart every 1,000 miles. Basically turned into a two stroke.

Aint that the truth..
